Tail Saver Perch Models

I have designed my perches to be ordered in a modular fashion. You may custom select a perch body style and a perch base style to build a perch that will meet your preferences. Because I make each perch individually, I can also add custom alterations.  Custom work will modify the price, and we will discuss those details when you place your order (some modifications will reduce the price, others will increase it).

The prices below are quotes for the particular component being discussed in each section. Even though each of the perch bodies pictured below includes a base, the base component is not included in the price listed for the perch body.

Please email me if you'd like more information or to place an order:

Perch Bodies

Standard Tail Saver with Bar Feet base and Synthetic Bark

Standard Tail Saver

26 inches wide at the base x 18 inches high.

This model most closely matches the design by Dr. Meng. It is suitable for all large perching hawks. The high tie off point of this model has two drawbacks:

  1. When the hawk bates there is increased leverage to pull the perch over.
  2. A longer leash is necessary. The leash must allow the hawks feet to reach the ground at no more than about a 45 to 60 degree angle.

However, the hawks are much more comfortable being higher off the ground. Its also a little easier to keep an eye on the hawk from a distance if they are higher off the ground. Seven rays are the standard making this perch suitable for all hawks larger than tiercel goshawks and tiercel Harris' hawks.  Additional rays can be included to prevent smaller hawks from passing through the perch and fouling the leash.  I can also make them without rays so that you can add your own screen (cloth or leather for example) to the center.

Low Tail Saver

26 inches wide at the base x 9 inches high.

To date I have only made one of these, but it worked out very well. Its been in active use for 5 years. It will make a great target perch when doing jump ups.  The tie off point is high enough to create the tail saver effect, but because it is lower to the ground the leash does not need to be as long. This makes it an excellent design for use where there are nearby obstructions (small weathering yards, small rooms with furniture close by, etc).  Also, because the tie off point is closer to the ground the hawk does not get as much leverage on the bate and this perch will not rock as much with each bate.  It will therefore have less of a tendency to walk (if ordered with a foot base) or wobble loose in the ground (if ordered with a spike base).

Micro Tail Saver with Pyramid Feet base and Synthetic Bark

Micro Tail Saver

18 inches wide at the base x 9 inches high.

I have only made one of these to date.  I built it for a merlin that I had for a short period of time. The rays are spaced so that even a tiercel kestrel or a musket sharpshin will not be able to pass through the perch.  It is more light weight than the Low Tail Saver, and works well as a table top perch for the small hawks.  I have used this as a target perch for doing jump ups with goshawks, but because of the light weight they move it around.  I could make this model with heavier feet to allow it to be used for large hawks as well as small, although the narrower width would not make this as suitable for larger hawks as the Low Tail Saver.

Perch Bases

I started making perches so that I could have a tail saver perch that I could bring indoors because all the ones available at the time had spikes.  What I quickly realized was that perches with a base are much easier to use outdoors (particularly in hard, frozen and/or rocky ground).  I rarely use my perches that have spikes because they are difficult to move and the spikes tend to wobble loose during use even when they have been driven solidly into the ground.

Most perches designed for indoor use utilize a large piece of plate steel or plywood as a base. While this works very well, it is wasteful and unnecessarily bulky, particular for a tail saver type perch. Having most of the weight away from the center of the perch increases the perches stability. The weight that is close in to the center of the perch does very little to hold the perch stable. Not having a large chunk of metal where it does not contribute to keeping the perch stable decreases the material cost and allows for a lighter perch without sacrificing functionality. I believe it creates a more elegant visual appearance as well.  It also means the hawk will be creating much less of a mess on the base of your perch.

Bar Foot
Bar Foot Base in carbon steel (painted flat black)

Bar Feet

18 inches for Standard Tail Saver and for Low Tail Saver, 14 inches for Micro Tail Saver

This base simply consists of two heavy bars of steel welded to the bottom of the perch body.  The Standard and Low tail saver perches have bars 3/8" thick and 3" wide.  The Micro Tail Saver has bars 1/4" thick and 2" wide.

The perch feet cause the perch to rock at the end of a vigorous bate, absorbing some of the energy from that bate that would otherwise be transferred to the top of the hawk's feet. The downside of this is that the slight rocking motion can allow the perch to tend to wander a little, but this is mitigated by a rubber non skid surface that is glued to the bottom.  The rubber surface also helps to protect the floor from scuffing.

Removable Bar Feet

18 inches for Standard Tail Saver and for Low Tail Saver, 14 inches for Micro Tail Saver

This base   The Standard and Low tail saver perches have bars 3/8" thick and 3" wide.  The Micro Tail Saver has bars 1/4" thick and 2" wide.

For this base option, a bracket is welded onto each foot and the body of the perch is modified slightly to fit into the brackets.  Each foot attaches to the perch body with a stainless steel bolt and nut.  Care was taken with the design to ensure that the leash cannot foul on the bolt or the nut. The perch can be assembled or broken down in a few minutes with common tools.  This makes the perch much easier to transport, ship, and store when not in use.

Pyramid Foott Base
Pyramid Foot Base in carbon steel (painted flat black)

Pyramid Feet

18 inches for Standard Tail Saver, 16 inches for Low Tail Saver, 14 inches for Micro Tail Saver

This base is constructed of a hollow piece of steel, filled to add weight. I then shape it give it a more elegant look and reduce the potential for the leash to snag on the base.

Spike

12 inches for Standard Tail Saver, 10 inches for Low Tail Saver, 8 inches for Micro Tail Saver

I have specialized in making tail saver perches with feet, which are far more versatile than spikes for both indoor and outdoor use. However, I can also make them with spikes if that is what you'd prefer. There will be three spikes - two long ones on the outside edges and one smaller one in the center. I strongly recommend using the spike lengths at least as long as those listed. If your ground is soft I can make the spikes longer to compensate.

Other Features

Synthetic Bark Perch Wrappping

Synthetic Bark

Because I am able to add the Synthetic Bark before construction for most finishes it is much easier for me to install it than it is to install on a perch that was made by someone else. If however the perch must be finished before the Synthetic Bark is added to the perch, the tail saver perch design is much more difficult than most to install it. Because Synthetic Bark is the only perching surface for metal perches that I have complete confidence in, I will not install any other perching surface on my perches. However, if you'd like to order one without a perching surface your welcome to add whatever you wish as a perching surface.

Synthetic Bark added prior to construction $20
Synthetic Bark added after construction $50

Extra Rays

I have constructed some perches with extra rays.  This allows the standard perches to be used with smaller hawks such as Coopers or even Sharpshinned hawks. Please contact me for more information and for pricing.
